At the end of January of 2007, it became apparent that the growing fleet of newly-arriving New Flyer E40LFRs that were gradually replacing the old Flyer E901A trolley buses had a troublesome defect with their power steering system. All the E40LFRs that were thus far active, which totalled 39, needed to be pulled from the road so the defect could be further investigated and corrected, which resulted in a sudden, overnight bus shortage. Alleviating the strain on the transit system caused by the sudden disappearance of 39 buses from the Vancouver depot bookout involving borrowing buses from other Translink garages, reviving old buses that had recently been parked, and - as is the focus of this album - borrowing four buses from BC Transit's small communities, 2 Orion Is from Chilliwack and 2 Orion Vs from Central Fraser Valley.

Last night of Flyer trolley

2805 spent her last day on run-6 of rt.3 (Main - Chinatown) on April 20th, 2008 and officially marked the final chapter of the operation of Flyer E901A / E902 trolleybuses in the Greater Vancouver region. The very first Flyer trolleybuses were introduced to the Vancouverites back in 1982, and they took a very important role in the history of the Vancouver trolleybus operation. Finally, their mission is over as the New Flyer low-floor trolleybuses (E40LFR / E60LFR) will succeed the duty and marks the start of another new era of Vancouver's trolleybus system which was first implemented in 1948.

August 16th, 2008 marked 60 years of trolley bus service on the streets of Vancouver. To mark the occasion, two New Flyer low-floor trolley buses from the active fleet joined four Transit Museum Society trolley buses for a procession from Vancouver Transit Centre to Stanley Park, where a public ceremony took place with dignitaries from Translink. The buses themselves sat on display at Stanley Park Loop for several hours before returning to VTC, then in the evening the Transit Museum Society held a private tour with two of the historic vehicles.

The last of the Flyer E901A trolley buses were retired from active service in Vancouver on April 20th, 2008. Many had already been withdrawn from service in the year and a half leading up to that final day, some of which had already been scrapped.

However, 80 of the old trolley coaches were given a reprieve from the scrapper. It was confirmed around the time the buses were retiring from active service with Translink that they would be sold to the company running transit in Mendoza, Argentina. Representatives from the company sifted through the dead buses at OTC and hand-picked the 80 that they would buy at a cost of $2,300 apiece.

On October 31st, 2008, members of the media, along with some members of the Transit Museum Society and Trans-Continental's photographers, were granted access to Fraser Surrey Docks where the buses were being loaded onto the ship that would take them to South America. Special thanks to Drew Snider of Translink, Brady Erno of Fraser Surrey Docks, and all others that made this photo opportunity possible.




Edison Transportation LLC, an American-based transportation management company contracted by VANOC, is responsible for managing and operating a fleet of 300 buses during the Winter Olympic and Paralympic games taking place in Vancouver and Whistler during the months of February and March of 2010. This special fleet of buses is mainly consisted of retired transit buses such as Gillig Phantoms, GMC and Novabus RTSes, MCI Classics, Flexible Metros, New Flyer D40s and New Flyer D40LFs, purchased from various American transit agencies based in the states of California and Arizona.

This fleet of buses is currently undergoing maintenance preparations and mechanical inspections in Lyndon, WA, before they hit the roads of Vancouver and serve our guests and visitors during the Olympic games.


March 20th, 2010: Orion I Charter

On March 20th, 2010, the transit enthusiasts behind the Trans-Continental and busshots photography websites (David Lam, Chris Cassidy and George Prior) organized a charter event with West Vancouver Municipal Transit's Orion I #926. On this cloudy day, we brought bus #926 through a gigantic loop in Lower Mainland including photo stops at Olympic Village streetcar station, Airport Station in Richmond, Ladner, Surrey, Coquitlam, White Pine Beach, Belcarra, SFU and terminated our journey at Lonsdale Quay. This journey lasted for five hours, and the memories will forever linger in our minds as the first transit charter organized and arranged by local enthusiasts.
